In the two weeks immediately preceding his passing, Sai Baba undertook a specific spiritual observance. As detailed in chapter 44, knowing his end was approaching, he had a Brahmin read the Ramayana to him. Baba listened to the narration with intense, focused contemplation for fourteen consecutive days and nights. This extended period of listening to the sacred text was a deliberate act. The narrative states that as these two weeks of listening to the Ramayana were completed, the day of Vijayadashami arrived, and on that very day, Baba attained the state of bodilessness and left his mortal coil.
