As explained in Chapter 27, devotees developed a practice based on the belief that reading a book blessed by Sai Baba would lead to the acquisition of merit. They would bring sacred texts, such as the Five-Jeweled Gita or life stories of saints, to Baba. Often using Madhavrao (Shama) as an intermediary, they would present the book at an opportune moment. Baba, knowing the devotee's heart, would take the book and turn some pages. However, instead of returning it to the original owner, he would frequently give the book to Shama to keep, demonstrating his wonderfully surprising and sometimes humorous ways of granting grace.
