Kashiram, a cloth seller, was attacked by Bhil robbers while returning from a market. While he did not object to them taking some of his belongings, he fiercely protected a small bundle he was carrying. As explained in Chapter 0, the thieves thought it contained treasure, but it was actually powdered sugar. This sugar was very dear to Kashiram because a saint named Janakidas Baba had advised him to feed it to ants. In the struggle to protect this bundle, Kashiram picked up a dropped sword, killed two thieves, but was then struck in the head with an axe and left for dead.
