In Chapter 1, an unusual event is described where Sai Baba, a detached saint with no possessions, suddenly began grinding wheat in the mosque. His actions drew the attention of villagers, and four women rushed in to help, taking over the task while singing his praises. After they had ground a 'payali' of wheat, they greedily prepared to divide the flour amongst themselves. However, Baba feigned anger and stopped them, commanding, "Go and throw this flour on the village boundary (Shiwar) now." The women, though humiliated, obeyed. It was later revealed that this act was Baba's method of symbolically grinding and casting out the cholera epidemic that plagued the village.
