Sai Baba was deeply and personally involved in every stage of preparing the food. As detailed in Chapter 38, He would personally go to the grocer to buy all the necessary ingredients like salt, chili, vegetables, and coconut, paying in cash. Back in the Masjid, He would grind grains and spices Himself, using a grinding stone. Baba managed the cooking fire, adjusting the fuel to control the heat, and undertook the main labor of cooking tirelessly and with great devotion, preparing dishes like savory food, large flatbreads called "Pole," and a gruel known as "Ambil."
