Before departing for the Chavadi, Sai Baba performed a series of distinct rituals. Chapter 37 recounts that after getting ready with His usual kafni, satka, and chilim, Baba would wait for Tatya Patil. After Tatya helped Him up and placed a shawl on Him, Baba would go to a spot where firewood was kept. There, He would move His right big toe for a moment. Then, in a remarkable act, Sai would personally wave His right hand over the burning flame there, extinguishing it completely before starting the procession.
