Based on Dr. Pillay's story, what is the reason for suffering even for a devout person living a pure life?

📖 Chapter 34

The story of Dr. Pillay in Chapter 34 provides insight into the nature of suffering. Dr. Pillay, a devotee very close to Sai Baba, experienced excruciating pain from a guinea-worm infestation. In his agony, he questioned why he had to endure such a state despite living a pure life. He himself acknowledged the underlying principle: the inescapable fruits of past actions, known as Prarabdha. He lamented that one must suffer the consequences and that there is no escape without experiencing them, even if it takes another birth. Baba's response did not negate this, but rather offered a way to manage the karmic debt by sharing the burden, illustrating that suffering is a consequence of past karma that must be endured.
