According to the scriptures, what is the significance of charity, particularly food donation, in our current era?

The scriptures of human duty outline different paths for different ages: Penance for the Krita age, Knowledge for the Treta, and Sacrifice for the Dvapara. For our current era, the Kali age, charity is the prescribed means. As Chapter 38 explains, the highest secret for quenching hunger is always charity, and among all forms of charity, the regular practice of food donation (Annadan) is considered the foremost deed. This is because food is seen as the very form of Para-Brahman, the Supreme Reality, from which all beings are born and into which they eventually merge. The text emphasizes that food is the essential means for a living being's survival.
