Damodar Dev reasoned that his failure to recognize Sai Baba was due to a confusing sequence of events that created a delusion. He explained that the Sanyasi had first appeared at his house to collect funds for cow protection *before* Dev had even extended the Udyapan invitation to Sai Baba in Shirdi.
