According to Chapter 17, what is considered the true purpose of human life, and what are the primary obstacles one must overcome?

📖 Chapter 17

Chapter 17 defines the true purpose of human life, or Purushartha, as the act of discarding the path of Preya (the pleasant) in order to honor and follow the path of Shreya (the good). The text identifies several major obstacles that hinder this pursuit. These include beginningless ignorance, or Maya, which is described as a false imposition like a mirage. Other significant hurdles mentioned in this chapter are the desires for worldly enjoyments, hope, and cravings, which must be dug out by the roots. Furthermore, the chapter warns that lust and anger are powerful tendencies that instantly disrupt the processes of listening, contemplation, and meditation required for spiritual progress.
