According to Chapter 16 of the Sai Satcharitra, what is the proper way for a disciple to approach a Sadguru, and what is the Guru's ultimate role?

📖 Chapter 16

Chapter 16 explains that the most important thing for a disciple is to surrender completely to the Sadguru, as the disciple often does not know their own pitfalls. The text warns against using "cleverness" (Chaturai) or having even a slight neglect in service, emphasizing that firm faith at the Guru's feet is essential. The Sadguru is described as 'Aptakama,' meaning one whose desires are already fulfilled, so he does not need material things. Instead, he accepts simple offerings like a leaf or flower if given with genuine faith but turns away from anything offered with pride. As detailed in this chapter, the Guru's ultimate role is to be the most generous giver, bestowing upon the devotee the "Unthinkable Object" (Brahman), a feat that even a wish-fulfilling gem cannot accomplish.
